CAROTID DOPPLER STUDY (NECK)

Your doctor has scheduled you to have a Carotid Doppler Study . This test will help your doctor assess the blood flow to your brain.

The test will be performed in the Non-Invasive Cardiology Services department.

Explanation of Procedure

For this test, you will lie on your back with a pillow under your head. The technologist will ask you to describe your symptoms, such as dizziness, numbness of the hands and/or feet, fainting, and how long you have had these symptoms. During the test, a small instrument called a transducer will send ultrasound waves through the portion of your body where it is applied. The technologist will apply gel to your neck and move the transducer along both sides of your neck to listen and watch your blood flow.

The test will take approximately 45 – 60 minutes.

Preparation for Procedure

1. There are no special dietary instructions or restrictions for this test.

Results

An MCH Cardiologist will interpret the study and results will be given to your physician, who will recommend treatment if needed.
